چکیده
Discovery of 10 µm silicate emission in quasars. Evidence of the AGN unification scheme. Abstract. According to the unified scheme, AGN are surrounded by a dust-torus, and the observed diversity of AGN properties results from the different orientations relative to our line of sight. The strong resonance of silicate dust at 10 µm is therefore, as expected, seen in absorption towards many type-2 AGN. In type-1 AGN, it should be seen in emission because the hot inner surface of the dust torus becomes visible. However, this has not been observed so far, thus challenging the unification scheme or leading to exotic modifications of the dust-torus model. Here we report the discovery of the 10 µm silicate feature in emission in two luminous quasars with the Infrared Spectrograph of the Spitzer Space Telescope.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

We describe observations of 9.7 μm silicate features in 97 AGNs, exhibiting a wide range of AGN types and of X-ray extinction toward the central nuclei. We find that the strength of the silicate feature correlates with the HI column density estimated from fitting the X-ray data, such that low HI columns correspond to silicate emission while high columns correspond to silicate absorption. The be...

Present AGN and starburst models aiming to account for the observed infrared SEDs consider a physical description of the dust and a solution of the radiative transfer problem. Mid infrared spectra obtained at different spatial scales (SST-IRS, ISO and Timmi2) are presented. They show that PAH bands are detected in starburst regions but significantly reduced near the centre of AGN. This is expla...
متن کاملThe Detection of Silicate Emission from Quasars at 10 and 18 Microns
We report the spectroscopic detection of silicate emission at 10 and 18μm in five PG quasars, the first detection of these two features in galaxies outside the Local Group. This finding is consistent with the unification model for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), which predicts that an AGN torus seen pole-on should show a silicate emission feature in the mid-infrared. The strengths of the detecte...

The recent Spitzer detections of the 9.7μm Si–O silicate emission in type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) provide support for the AGN unification scheme. The properties of the silicate dust are of key importance to understand the physical, chemical and evolutionary properties of the obscuring dusty torus around the AGN. Compared to that of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM), the 10μm silicat...
